Auspiciousness of Sawan Month
The
month of Shravan in (July – August) also known as Sawan Mas is considered very
auspicious for worshipping Lord Shiva.
It
is also the first month of Chatur Mas - the four holiest months in Hindu Hindi
Calendar.
Each day of Sawan is regarded as very pious. Special prayers and rituals are performed in Lord Shiva temples. Mondays or Somvars of Shravan month are specially observed with austerity.
It
is believed that the worship of Shiva during Shrawan month is 108 times more
powerful than worshipping during normal days. Millions of devotees observe the Sawan/Shravan
Somwar Vrat when fasting and performing pujas on Mondays in this month is
undertaken. It is believed that those who observe Sawan Somwar vrat will have
their desires fulfilled and will be blessed with wisdom. In some areas, fasting
on Mondays is observed by unmarried women to get a good husband.
Legend associated with Sawan month
There
is an interesting legend associated with Sawan month. Samudra Manthan or
churning of Ocean took place in the month of Sawan. At this fourteen different
types of rubies came out. Thirteen of these were distributed amongst the
demons, except Halahal (poison). Lord Shiva drank the poison and stored it in
his throat. Hence the name Neelkantha (meaning blue throat) is attributed to
Shiva.
How to worship Lord Shiva in Sawan month
Lord
Shiva is worshipped along with his entire family in the month of Sawan. However,
the main Shravan Puja is the worship of Shivlinga with Gangajal. Many devotees
collect Gangajal and offer it to Shiva Linga. Many Shiva devotees observe
strict fast for the whole month of Sawan and many observe only on Mondays. Many
people observe different vows during the month like having only vegetarian
food, or reading a particular Holy Scripture on all days of the month. Read
Shiva Purana in Sawan Month, Wear Rudraksha, offer Gangajal or normal Water to
Lord Shiva and feel the energy of Shiva and Shakti in yourself.
Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Shiv Linga and the prayer therefore starts with worshipping Shiv Linga and offering it Abhishek with milk, water, curd, ghee, honey or sugar, ganga jal etc. After that Belpatra, Kusha and Doob is offered to Lord Shiva to please him. In the end, Bhang, Dhatoora, and Shriphal are offered to the lord in the form of Bhoga.
Use Bel Patra for worshipping Lord Shiva
Belpatra is offered to the lingam
to please Bhole Baba. Brahma Ji in an ancient tale told saints that Lord Shiva
is highly pleased with Bela Patra and one Belpatra is considered equal to 1,000
Neelkamal flowers.
