Christmas is a
festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ which is commonly observed on
December 25 around the world. In all the awakened persons, Jesus Christ is very
close to my heart because human beings today can identify them with Jesus in a
very easy way. If you look at awakened person like Gautam Buddha, you will find
that his language is that of a scholar. He has a philosophic point of view which
is difficult for a common man to identify with but the words of Jesus are plain
and ordinary. If you read New Testament in Bible, you will find Jesus has used
words which are very easy for a common man to understand because He was
speaking to common people. Leo Tolstoy in one of his books has said that “Christ
is God and man working together, walking together and dancing together”. The
inference of this quote is that God cannot work alone because He needs an
instrument to do His work. Man alone is not competent enough. He is like a
hollow bamboo and he needs someone to create a melody to turn into a flute. Christ
is a flute on God’s lips. Through Him, God has given message of love to the
mankind. Christmas is the opportunity to worship God, to bow down and pay
homage to Him for humbling Himself and appearing in human form.
There are some customs
involved in celebrating Christmas like decorating a fir tree. There is
significance involved in such customs although we tend to follow such customs
without understanding their significance. The custom of decorating fir tree has
its roots in non-Christian cultures. For the Germanic people, evergreen fir
trees were an important fertility symbol and gave hope that spring will return
after winter. In ancient Rome, fir tree branches were brought home to keep away
harm and evil spirits. The tradition of decorations was only established later
on in the 17th century. First of all the tree was decorated with anything to
hand, Christmas decorations were then finally systematically made and sold in
the 19th century with the advent of industrialization.
May the magic of Christmas gladden
your heart with the joys of the season.
May the spirit of Christmas bless you
with greater strength.
May the promise of Christmas bring you and yours endless
blessings.
Merry Christmas
